![]() Pecola Breedlove, Morrison’s representation of all young black girls at the time, desires to have blue eyes, the definitive symbol of whiteness and beauty. Toni Morrison, the author of the remarkable novel, The Bluest Eye, explores the endeavors of characters from both perspectives conforming, rather than subverting, to the rules of institutionalized beauty characters such as Pecola and Geraldine, reflections of young black girls and women at the time who suffered from the internalized racism and desperately searched for ways to retain their beauty to escape the grotesque perspective of society. However, when a woman’s “whiteness” became the standard of beauty across the 1940s white-dominated society, African American females faced the wrath of their own community through the rise of internalized racism, which defined beautiful women as lighter-skin colored females while demeaning those with a darker skin color. ![]() ![]() Beauty plays an important role in a woman’s femininity it gives a woman confidence and acceptance from society. ![]() ![]() ![]() Collaboration with her search dog partner made the surprising difference to her own healing. This work had a profound effect on Charleson, perhaps because, for her, this journey began as a personal one: Charleson herself struggled with posttraumatic stress disorder for months after a particularly grisly search. I really needed more focus on the emotional connection, because we saw several red flags about how incompatible they probably were out of the bedroom. ![]() However… however, the plentiful spicy scenes and constant reminders about the way they can “never be together” soon became repetitive, and it became pretty clear that this couple only connected in the bedroom. It was such a strong start, and I was confident that this would be an easy 5-star read for me. They didn’t know about the connection until they’d already crossed all sorts of lines, so there was no forgetting the way they felt together. I loved their initial meeting, and the forbidden element felt fresh, new, and very intriguing. This couple is FIRE together, and the first half is all sugar, spice, and everything not-so-nice. ![]() ![]() ![]() Dramatic lighting-dawn’s glow, the lamp-like shine of the honeycomb, the dusk of evening-amplifies the spreads’ appeal while offering a clear temporal feel. Brief phrases soon pile up in pleasing ways, as when the bear (“a hungry bear/ a honey bear”) first makes an attempt on the goods: “a sneaky busy honey bear// a fretful bee/ a paw in tree// a very angry fuzzy bee.” Not until it hoists itself into the tree does the bee, shown with comically tiny wings and an outraged expression, register the complaint, enlisting the help of its hive-mates. After both parties awaken and stretch in the morning light, kinetic digital spreads by Scott ( I Was Born a Baby) show the bear, with big, googly eyes and a sheepish expression, stalking the hive through grass while the bee goes about its business collecting pollen. Short, punchy words and playful rhymes help Bernstrom ( Song in the City) commemorate the victory of a small bee over a large, honey-hungry bear in this playful picture book. ![]() ![]() But once he meets Evie Savoie, he wants only one thing. ![]() Convinced he's cursed, he needs the help of a powerful witch to break the hex.
